Ohio Trail Shuttle can help you plan your trip on the Ohio to Erie Trail

Mr. & Mrs. Brian Peters stopped by to visit the Century Cycles store in Peninsula earlier this week. They are the proprietors of Ohio Trail Shuttle, a relatively new business based in the Columbus, Ohio area. They can help you if you are planning a bicycle trip on the Ohio to Erie Trail.

The Ohio to Erie Trail is a 326-mile bicycle route connecting Cincinnati and Cleveland using a combination of paved and unpaved bike trails and roads. There are many resources available along the way for food and lodging, including both hotels and camping.

You can make arrangements with Ohio Trail Shuttle to, for example, pick you up in Cleveland and drive you and your bicycle to start your bike tour in Cincinnati. Or, you can pedal from Cleveland to Cincinnati, and they will pick you up at the end of your trip and drive you back to Cleveland. You can also come up with custom trips; just talk to them about your needs!

Bike Travel Weekend Camp-Out Ride: June 1-2, 2019

The mission of the Adventure Cycling Association is to inspire and empower people to travel by bicycle. May 31 through June 2 has been designated as the fourth annual Bike Travel Weekend, when we're joining them to encourage anyone to try taking an overnight trip by bicycle.

On June 1, 2019, we've planned a Bike Camp-Out Ride, and YOU are invited! Space is limited to 25 people!

Here's how the Bike Camp-Out Ride will work:

  1. Click here to register yourself and any family members. There is no cost to participate, but you must pre-register.
  2. Between now and Saturday, June 1, make sure you've got the necessary camping gear and related stuff (see below).
  3. On June 1 around 3:00pm, we'll depart on our bikes from the Century Cycles store in Peninsula.
  4. We'll ride about 28 miles to the campground at West Branch State Park outside Ravenna. The route is a combination of busy main roads, quiet back roads, and some bike path. We've updated the route from last year to include more miles on bike paths and fewer miles on busy roads. Still, if you are not comfortable riding this distance on roads shared with motor vehicles, then this event is not for you!
  5. When we arrive at the camp site, we'll set up our tents and hang out around the camp fire.
  6. Dinner and beverages will be provided, but feel free to bring some snacks and beverages for yourself and/or to share.
  7. The next morning (Sunday, June 2), we'll wake up, pack up our gear, and ride back to Peninsula. We may stop for breakfast along the way, but you are responsible for your own breakfast.

What to Bring

Here is our suggested list of what you'll need to pack for a basic one-night bike camping trip:
  1. You will need your own bicycle.
  2. Helmet (required)
  3. Headlight and taillight (required)
  4. Water bottles with water or sports drink
  5. Bike lock
  6. Cycling clothing (appropriate for the weather)
  7. Casual clothing for hanging out at camp
  8. Tent
  9. Camp sleeping pad
  10. Sleeping bag
  11. Camp pillow
  12. Headlamp or flashlight for getting around the campsite after dark
  13. Toothbrush, toothpaste, medications, any other personal items and toiletries you need
  14. Mosquito repellent spray
  15. Optional: Snacks and beverages for the evening and morning
Remember that you'll need to carry whatever you bring on your bike! If you need any racks or panniers to carry your gear, please bring your bike into one of our stores, and we'll help outfit you!

West Branch State Park Campground Facilities
  • Water: There is running water available that is safe for drinking, cooking, and washing.
  • Restrooms: There is a pit toilet near the camp site, without running water. A short walk from the camp site is a full-service indoor restroom, with running water, flush toilets, and showers.
  • Fire: We'll use the fire ring at the camp site for roasting hot dogs, marshmallows, etc. You may bring your own camp stove if you'd like to prepare your own food.
  • Recreation: There are hiking trails, a disc golf course, and a playground a short walk from the camp site. The mountain bike trail is about 3½ miles from the camp site.
Join us and have fun!

If you've never taken an overnight trip on your bike before, it's FUN and EASIER than you think! Our staff are bike-camping enthusiasts, and will be there to help you every step of the way. We've taken numerous Sub 24-Hour Overnights ourselves, and have even written an article on the subject for a local fitness magazine!

Composite Confidence Protection Plan from Giant Bicycle and Liv Cycling

Click here to watch the Giant Bicycles Composite Confidence video
Giant Bicycles and Liv Cycling are so confident in their composite technology, if any composite frame or component is structurally damaged while you’re riding in the first two years after you bought it, they’ll repair it or replace it free of charge.

Crash your new frame in the final turn of the local crit? Don’t worry about it! You’re covered. Case a landing and crack your rim? Whoa, way to charge. You’re covered. Handlebars? Same deal. Seatposts? Yep.

We’re backing our products in a way no other company is willing to. We’re confident in what Giant and Liv Cycling makes. We want you to be too. It’s that simple.

Now, this only goes for product you bought in the U.S. at an authorized Giant dealer, and it only covers damage done while riding, so don’t go driving into your garage with your bike on top of your car. That’s on you.

There are other details you need to know about the Composite Confidence support plan, but our goal is to make it as simple possible, so you can get pedaling again.

The Adventure Cycling Association recently announced the winners of the 2109 Greg Siple Award for Young Adult Bicycle Travel.

In return, each recipient will perform an outreach project in their community to promote bicycle touring. Applicants proposed their projects in written applications, and 10 finalists in each award category were asked to make short videos about their projects.

Now in its sixth year, the Greg Siple Award was developed to introduce more young people to bicycle travel. The award is named in honor of Adventure Cycling’s co-founder and longtime art director Greg Siple (also co-founder of the Tour of the Scioto River Valley - TOSRV), who discovered bike touring as a young adult and inspired generations of people to travel by bike.

Help bring "The Bikes of Wrath" film to Medina!

The Bikes of Wrath is a 2018 documentary film about five Australians who attempt to cycle 2600 kilometers from Oklahoma to California in honor of the westward migration undertaken by the fictional Joad family in the classic John Steinbeck novel "The Grapes of Wrath." Through chance encounters with everyday Americans, the cyclists expand on the novel’s core themes of migration, inequality, and the perceived land of opportunity. The group explores whether America has progressed since the book was written, discussing the wealth gap, immigration, and the American Dream. The fascinating people they meet along the way reveal the enduring strength of human spirit despite the inequality and disenfranchisement which runs as deep today, as it did in Steinbeck’s seminal novel. The Bikes of Wrath is a unique, funny, and insightful documentary filled with adventure, literature, music, and human connection.

Demand.Film is trying to get this film screened across the USA. There is a screening tentatively scheduled in Medina:

When: Monday, April 15, 2019, 6:30pm

2019 Schedule of Night Rides on the Towpath Trail

Announcing the 2019 schedule of Century Cycles Night Rides on the Towpath Trail! We've been riding at night for 25 years, so we figure we've helped about 25,000 people enjoy over 200,000 miles on the most popular trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park!

Our Night Rides are fun, free, casual and non-competitive rides on the car-free Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. No pre-registration is necessary, and all ages and skill levels are welcome! Under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. You must have your own bicycle, helmet, and headlight.

The rides start and end at the Century Cycles store in Peninsula at 1621 Main Street, Peninsula, Ohio, 44264. Parking is available at the Lock 29 Trailhead north of the store. We ride about 14 miles (7 miles out and back), but you can turn around sooner if you want a shorter ride.

Feedback sessions for the new CVNP Central Visitor Center

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is developing exhibits for the park’s new central visitor center, set to open later this year at the intersection of Riverview Road and Boston Mills Road near Peninsula.

The public is invited to attend one of three open houses to preview and provide input on the exhibits. The park is working to create a welcoming experience that helps visitors of various backgrounds and abilities find what interests them and easily plan their own park experience. Feedback from the public is a critical step at this point in the design.

Participants may arrive at any time during the open house and should plan on allowing approximately 90 minutes to review the exhibits and provide comments. No registration is required.

First bicycle touring visitor of the 2019 season in Peninsula

We had our first bicycle touring visitor of the 2019 season on Monday, March 11 at the Century Cycles store in Peninsula! Anthony lives in Cleveland, and he rode the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail south. After the stop in our store, he planned to continue south to camp for the night near Clinton or Massillon, then head back home the next day. This short trip is a shakedown ride for a longer trip he has planned in the Spring on the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Towpath Trail.

See more photos of bicycle touring visitors that have visited all three of our stores in our Bicycle Touring Photo Gallery.
